First Aid Supply

A well-stocked first-aid kit is a necessity in all working environments. Having first aid supplies available ahead of time will help you handle an emergency at a moment's notice. You should always keep a first-aid kit in your home, business and car.

First aid kits do need to be replenished once used, so if you have already purchased a kit you will almost certainly be able to purchase first aid supplies to keep the kit well stocked. It is probably a good idea to actually get first aid supplies and keep them in reserve then re-stock as and when necessary.

Where no special risk arises within the workplace a minimum stock of first aid would normally be:

• 1 Guidance Leaflet or first aid guide
• 1 Sterile plasters
• 20 Sterile Eye Pads
• 2 Triangular Bandages
• 4 Safety Pins
• 6 Medium Dressings
• 6 Large Dressings
• 2 Gloves (Pairs)

Once an assessment has been carried out the exact first aid supply will be apparent, the kit may need to contain additional materials and equipment, for example scissors, adhesive tape, disposable aprons and individually wrapped moist wipes.

As well as cuts there is the likelihood that home workers, office workers and vehicle-based workers can suffer from sprains, scalds, and burns and eye conditions. You may therefore wish to choose supplies that include burn relief sprays, supportive bandages and eyewash. There is the distinct possibility that some types of office workers may have to administer first aid to them. When choosing a first aid kit it is wise to take these considerations into account and to include these additional items.

Make sure you read the entire first-aid manual so you'll understand how to use the contents of your kits. Store your first-aid kits in places that are easily accessible but not likely to damaged. Check the kits regularly. Replace missing items or medicines that may have expired.

• antibiotic cream (triple-antibiotic ointment)
• antiseptic solution (like hydrogen peroxide)
• hydrocortisone cream (1%)
• acetaminophen and ibuprofen
• tweezers
• sharp scissors
• safety pins
• disposable instant cold packs
• calamine lotion
• alcohol wipes or ethyl alcohol
• thermometer
• plastic gloves (at least 2 pairs)
• flashlight and extra batteries
• mouthpiece for administering CPR (can be obtained from your local Red Cross)
• your list of emergency phone numbers
• blanket (stored nearby)
